Seminar description

New book on the concept of democracy

Jeppe Nevers’ doctoral dissertation on Danish conceptions of democracy will be published by the University Press of Southern Denmark on the 4th of February 2011. The book focuses on Danish examples but also charts general patterns in the European history of the concept.

This conference is organised by HPSCG and the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow, in cooperation with European University in Saint-Petersburg and the German Historical Institute in Moscow.

Towards a Historical Semantics of Emotions

Doctors and scientists tend to view emotions as primarily linked to bodily functions, and explain them in terms of nerves, hormones, and adaptive mechanisms. Philosophers, theologians and psychologists, who throughout the ages argued about the rationality and cognitive status of Emotions, treat them often as a basic human faculty.

Redescriptions vol. 12, Yearbook of Political Thought, Conceptual History and Feminist Theory has recently come out. New volume includes articles by Quentin Skinner, Kari Saastamoinen, Burkhard Conrad, Raymond Geuss, Kari Palonen and Jan Ifversen etc. Table of contents can be found here.

A workshop on the History of Concepts will be held at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute in September 13-17. The workshop will consist of sessions devoted to concepts from different realms: the Political, the Social, The Natural sciences and Medicine, and will be guided by lecturers from 'Concepta' as well as lecturers from the Zentrum  fuer Literatur- und Kulturforschung, Berlin.

The 11th Annual International Conference on Conceptual History will take place in Seoul, Korea, September 18-19, 2008. This year title is " Global-Historical Diffusion of Western Concepts and the Transformation of Northeast Asian Regional Order".

Quentin Skinner’s new book on Thomas Hobbes's theory of liberty is available. The first thing to meet the eye in Hobbes and Republican Liberty is that Skinner is discussing republican liberty. This is a term he had abandoned on historical grounds, and started  to call this theory of freedom neo-Roman. But in this book he has decided to "adopt the terminology now in general use."

Finnish Yearbook of Political Thought (Volumes 1-7, 1997 - 2003), more recently known as Redescriptions and  Yearbook of Political Thought and Conceptual History (Volume 8, 2004) are  now available online on website at http://www.jyu.fi/yhtfil/redescriptions/articles.htm
 

A new issue of the Redescriptions (volume 11) was published in december 2007. It includes articles and reviews by Helge Jordheim, F. R. Ankersmith, Wim Weymans, Pasi Ihalanen and  Martin J. Burke among others.

According to Cambridge University Press Quentin Skinner's new book will be published in march 2008. The book's title is Hobbes and Republican Liberty. In the book Skinner developes his earlier ideas about the nature of liberty and the two rival theories of liberty during Hobbes' era. See further details in Cambridge University Press-site.

The third Concepta’s “Introduction to Conceptual History” summer school began today at the University of Helsinki. The summer school is organized in co-operation with the Centre for Nordic Studies (University of Helsinki), Centre of Excellence in Political Thought and Conceptual Change (University of Jyväskylä), Danish Research School for History, POLITU – Finnish Political Science Doctoral School and Helsinki Summer School.

The Concepta advisory board met in Rome for the first time in February 2007. The board subsequently agreed that Concepta will organise four research training seminars in the 2008-2009 period in the following order: Transcending Concepts, Beyond Classical Key Concepts, Constitutions and Constitutionalism and Historical Argumentation in Political Discourse.
